My Circle

Corey Hinds

Every New Year, we tend to think about our successes, accomplishments and most of all the goals that we did not reach. We think about what kind of planning steps we took to get started; joining a gym, starting a diet plan, signing up for a class, consulting with a financial adviser, whatever it may have been that we thought we needed to get our goals in motion. Last year, how did you do? Be honest. Do you wish you had been more effective in reaching your goals?

One thing we may have never looked at is one of the most powerful contributors to our growth, development and behavior. Your circle of influence. Your friends, confidants, cheer leaders. The first question to ask is, “What are their successes? What are their goals? What’s the subject of most of our conversations? Is it constructive? Do our interactions build up, create anxiety or conflict? If you are the smartest, most accomplished or motivated person in your circle, you are feeding others and being drained not inspired. It's time to get out the shallow end and swim with bigger fish.

Is it wrong to leave your friends, longtime associates or even change the amount of time you spend with certain family members? Not at all. On the contrary, when you completed the requirements for elementary school, did you refuse to go to middle school because of the memories and good times on the playground and nap time? No. When the time came, you progressed to the next level and MOST of the students in that group did the same. Did you go back to hang out with those who were not able to progress to middle school. Not a chance. So why stifle yourself, goals and dreams to accommodate your peers.

Your goals, your success and your future are your own. Do what you need to do to make strides to your best life. That may mean it's time to change your circle to those who are where you want to be or who are going where you want to go. It's time to Level UP!
